KOOMPI Cloud for Universities

2 MIN READ

Most of what we have built started with students. KOOMPI began in 2018 as a laptop running a Linux made for students. Today KOOMPI OneLab is in more than 70 school labs around Cambodia. We still think the most useful thing we can do is put real tools in young people's hands.

University students are next. Many of them learn to code. They build a website for a class, an app for a final-year project, sometimes the start of a business. But most of that work stays on their laptops, and when the semester ends nobody else ever uses it.

A lot of learning happens once something is online. You find out what breaks when other people use your app, how a database behaves, and how to read the logs when something goes wrong. That is hard to learn from slides. And putting an app online costs money: most hosting is billed in dollars and asks for a credit card, which most students here don't have.

KOOMPI Cloud is a project of our team at KOOMPI. It runs websites, apps and databases on servers in Phnom Penh, and you pay only for the minutes they run. This site runs on it. We have just updated it, and we want students to use it.

So we are starting KOOMPI Cloud for Universities. Each university that joins gets up to $10,000 in free KOOMPI Cloud credits for its students.

Credits alone are not enough, so we will also come to each university and run workshops on campus. We will show students how to put an app online, connect a database and find out what went wrong when it breaks. After the workshop we keep helping them while they build. We are happy to plan the workshops with lecturers, around what they already teach.

If you teach at or run a university and want this for your students, write to us at start@smallworld.xyz.
